The promise God made to David was not merely that his physical descendants would rule, but that a future offspring would establish God’s kingdom forever. This promise is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Priesthood pre-dates the Aaronic (Levitical) priesthood and is superior to it. Melchizedek was both a king of Salem and a priest of God Most High, a dual role that foreshadows Christ. Jesus uniquely fulfills the offices of both King (from the Davidic line) and Priest (after the order of Melchizedek). He stands in the place for His people, fulfilling all the covenants.
