The word apostolic is connected to the idea of being sent. An apostolic Church is therefore a Church that understands that it has been sent by God. Jesus did not save believers merely so they could attend meetings, receive blessings, and wait for heaven. He saved them so that they could become instruments through whom His purposes would be accomplished on earth. The early Church provides a powerful picture of this reality. After the resurrection and ascension of Christ, the disciples did not simply preserve the memory of Jesus. They carried His message, demonstrated His power, preached the Gospel, raised disciples, and became witnesses of His resurrection. The Church became the visible expression of an invisible Christ. This is one of the major ideas behind an apostolic Church: Christ continues His work through His people. One of the greatest characteristics of the apostolic Church is that Christ is not merely preached; He is expressed. It is possible for a person to know Christian terminology without carrying the character of Christ.
