God said of Jesus, This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. He did no sin, and yet he paid the wages of sin. He experienced the agony of death though he deserved only eternal life. Why did he die, and die this death of condemnation? It was in our place. It was for our sins. It was bearing our shame. It was suffering the condemnation that we have merited. That is why he had to die, as our substitute, making atonement for our sin. It was as a sacrifice that he died and the sacrifice was accepted by the one true and living holy God.
