The Holy Spirit is the agent of the new birth, giving spiritual life to those who were spiritually dead and placing them in the body of Christ. At the moment of salvation, the Holy Spirit takes up permanent residence in the believer, serving as a seal and a guarantee of their eternal inheritance. The Spirit of truth guides believers into all truth, helping them understand the Scriptures and discern God’s will for their daily lives. As the Helper or Comforter (Parakletos in Greek), the Holy Spirit provides consolation during difficult times and intercedes for believers in prayer when they do not know how to pray. By yielding to the Spirit’s control, believers produce the Fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control which reflects the character of Christ.
