It is important to note that Mk.9:43-50 is not a parable. Jesus was speaking a mystery, a reality of the great beyond. This passage is not an illustration but an instruction. In this world, nothing is eternal. I Jn.2:15-17 There is no permanent feature on the earth, but when we talk of eternity, we are talking about permanence. Eternity is not measured in time, change or growth. Everything about enlargement, improvement, expansion and positive change is alien to eternity. Eternity is about constancy and rigidity. Once a man dies, his state is permanent.

Nothing can change or improve it. When we step into eternity, we have stepped into something that we cannot change or improve on. Eternity is about perfection. Jesus said if our hand should offend us, we should cut it off as it is better to enter into life maimed than otherwise. The question is are we not already in life? So what other life was Jesus talking about? When we talk of life, we are not talking about existence. Rather we are talking about a gr… You can’t afford to miss this powerful teaching!
